Almost all of our silver earrings are Taika-korut's own designs, so you won't find the same styles in other shops. We design the collection ourselves and choose our makers based on experience going back to 2009: the ones we still work with are those whose work we can rely on. We know every piece in detail and can tell you exactly what you need to know if anything is unclear. Many earrings, especially at the budget end, look good online, but the reality can be quite different. With us, you get good-quality earrings at a fair price.

How do you recognise a good silver earring?

An earring can look beautiful in a photo, but quality only shows when you wear it. We look at three things. The clasp has to keep the earring in place all day, and the back mustn't work loose. The finish has to be careful, with no sharp edges or uneven spots. And any plating has to stand up to everyday wear. These are the things that have shaped our range over the years.

Ask Riikka: what's the difference between silver and silver-plated earrings?

Riikka is one of the two founders of Taika-korut and has been helping customers choose their jewellery since 2009.

"The names sound alike, but the difference is big. A silver earring is sterling silver 925 all the way through: 92.5 per cent silver, with the rest made up of hardening metals, usually copper, because pure silver is too soft for jewellery. A silver-plated earring has a base of cheap metal with a thin layer of silver on top. When that wears off, a reddish metal often shows through, and even the seller doesn't always know what the alloy contains. With earrings, I wouldn't put anything into the thin skin of a piercing without knowing what it is."

"Silver also has a long life cycle. Sterling silver 925 can be recovered and reused in new jewellery, whereas the thin silver layer on plated jewellery is practically lost for good."

Why does silver tarnish, and what does rhodium plating mean?

"Untreated sterling silver tarnishes over time, but a polishing cloth brings back the shine. Because there's no surface layer to wear off, it's the longest-lasting option. Rhodium-plated silver has a thin rhodium layer that gives a white-gold-like shine and slows down tarnishing. Gold plated silver has a gold layer on the surface, giving you a gold tone for less than solid gold. The plating lasts well in everyday use, but not forever: perfume, swimming and friction gradually wear it away."

Can you be allergic to silver?

"A silver allergy is extremely rare. There are only a handful of confirmed cases, and none of them are linked to wearing jewellery. Sterling silver 925 contains 7.5 per cent other metals, which sensitive skin can occasionally react to, but if a silver ring is fine and silver earrings aren't, it's unlikely to be an allergy. In that case, the cause is usually dirt that has built up on the post. Silver contains no nickel, and all our earrings comply with EU nickel restrictions (REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex XVII, entry 27). Caring for silver earrings

Store your earrings separately from other jewellery so they don't get scratched, and wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing. Wash the post and your earlobe regularly with mild soap. You'll find more detailed instructions in our jewellery care guide.
