Hoop and Huggie Earrings

Gold plated silver hoops are sterling silver with a layer of gold on the surface. They include slim bubble hoops and hoops with a charm of your choice.

Ask Riikka: what size hoop earrings should I choose?

Riikka is one of the two founders of Taika-korut and has been helping customers choose their jewellery since 2009.

"This is by far the most common question. Most people end up with a 13–15 mm hoop about 1.5–2.5 mm wide. People who like small hoops that don't hang too far below the earlobe tend to choose 13 mm, which keeps the hoop in proportion. The position of the piercing matters too: if it's near the bottom edge of the lobe, even a small hoop will do, but a piercing closer to the middle suits a slightly larger one."

"With hoops over 15 mm, it's worth looking at the width. Larger hoops are usually slim, and that's how it should be: a wide hoop at 17–20 mm starts to look rather chunky and no longer delicate. There are also very thin hoops of 30–50 mm, but there's less demand for them at the moment."

How do you recognise a good clasp?

"The first thing customers do is check whether the hoop opens easily and clicks firmly shut. If the clasp feels flimsy, they don't buy it, and rightly so. That's why, over the years, we've stopped working with makers whose clasps don't hold. A hinged hoop has no loose parts, so there's no back to lose. On hoops with a post and back, it's worth tightening the back every now and then."

What shape is popular right now?

"Right now, a perfectly round profile is the most popular. Shapes change with fashion: sometimes U-shaped hoops are in, sometimes more angular or rectangular ones. This is probably linked to a wider trend in jewellery towards more delicate pieces."

What about hoops with a charm?

"They're especially popular with young adults right now. A hoop of about 14 mm with a small charm or stone hanging from it is just the right size and still has personality. Hoops with interchangeable charms are also really taking off, because one pair gives you several different looks."

9ct gold or gold plated silver?

"Gold plated silver has grown the most in popularity over the last three years, probably because the price of gold has risen so high. A gold plated hoop is sterling silver with a layer of gold on the surface. The plating lasts well, but not forever. A 9ct gold hoop is solid gold all the way through, so its colour stays the same even if you wear it every day."

Are hoop earrings suitable for sensitive ears?

"Our silver and gold hoops contain no nickel, and all our earrings comply with EU nickel restrictions (REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex XVII). If your ear turns red, I'd first recommend cleaning the hoop and the clasp, as the cause may be bacteria that have built up between the earlobe and the metal. The skin on the earlobe is sensitive, and the area around the piercing can't breathe if you don't take your earrings out at night."
