Ask Riikka: what kind of gold earrings should I choose?

Riikka is one of the two founders of Taika-korut and has been helping customers choose their jewellery since 2009.

"Hinged hoops are the most popular. They come in several sizes, but 13 mm is our best seller. People who buy gold earrings usually aren't looking for statement pieces, but for classic, understated earrings that go with everything. Gold carries a certain sense of value, but if a gold earring is very large, it loses that. That's why, with gold, it's better to choose small or medium rather than large."

Why do so many people choose gold?

"Some customers tell us that gold is the only material that suits their ears. Other metals can irritate their earlobes, but they've had no problems with gold. Gold sensitivity is rare, which makes gold the safest choice for many people with sensitive ears. I've written more about this in our guide to jewellery materials and allergies."

Why do we use 9ct (375) gold?

The price of raw gold has risen sharply over the past couple of years, and 9ct gold has become more widely used as a result, both in Finland and elsewhere in Europe. With 9ct gold, we can offer genuine gold earrings at a price that stays reasonable. At the same time, sales of 18ct (750) gold have fallen because of its high price. Every one of our gold pieces is hallmarked 375.

What's the difference between 375, 585 and 750 gold?

The number tells you how many thousandths of the piece are pure gold: 375 (9ct) gold is 37.5% gold, 585 (14ct) gold is 58.5% and 750 (18ct) gold is 75%. The rest is made up of other metals that make the gold more durable. 9ct gold is slightly paler in tone than higher purities, and also slightly harder. In earrings, hardness is an advantage, as the post and clasp stand up better to bending and scratches. On the other hand, harder gold isn't as easy to reshape if the piece ever needs repairing.

Solid gold or gold plated silver?

A solid gold piece is the hallmarked gold alloy all the way through, so its colour stays the same even as the surface wears. Gold plated silver has a thin layer of gold over silver, giving you a gold tone for less, but the plating gradually wears with use. If you want earrings for everyday wear over many years, solid gold is the more durable choice.

Do gold earrings contain nickel?

No. Our gold earrings contain no nickel, and all our earrings comply with EU nickel restrictions (REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex XVII, entry 27). If your ear turns red, the cause is usually dirt that has built up on the post rather than the material itself. Read more on our earrings page.

Caring for gold earrings

Store your earrings separately from other jewellery and wipe them with a soft cloth after wearing. If the surface dulls over time, a jewellery polishing cloth will bring back the shine.
