Most of our earrings are sterling silver 925 or 9ct (375) gold, and the range also includes titanium, stainless steel and brass designs. Most of the collection is our own design, and we're careful to make sure our earrings meet the standards of even our most demanding customers.

Ask Riikka: what kind of earrings suit me?

Riikka is one of the two founders of Taika-korut and has been helping customers choose their jewellery since 2009.

"This is the question we're asked most often, and many people don't really know the answer themselves. People tend to look for familiar styles, sometimes from decades ago, because it's hard to picture a new shape on your own ear. It's a bit like glasses: it's hard to change the style of your frames, even if a new one would suit you better."

"In general, soft, rounded shapes suit most people better than angular or very graphic ones. If the rest of your style is clean-lined, an angular earring can work well too. It's also worth thinking about ease: an earring should be easy to put in and take out. For older customers, this is often the deciding factor, and then a hinged hoop or a simple hook earring is the right choice."

What are the earrings made of, and can they cause an allergy?

"We're asked this about almost every piece, and rightly so. Around one in five Finnish women is sensitised to nickel, so the concern is understandable. Even so, many people worry unnecessarily, as nickel in jewellery has been restricted in the EU since 1994. Our silver and gold earrings contain no nickel, and a true silver allergy is extremely rare. If a silver ring is fine but silver earrings aren't, it's unlikely to be an allergy, because a genuine allergy would rule out the material altogether. Stainless steel does contain nickel, but it is so chemically bound that it isn't released onto the skin."

"All our earrings comply with EU nickel restrictions (REACH Regulation 1907/2006, Annex XVII, entry 27), whatever the material. The post that goes through the piercing may release no more than 0.2 μg/cm² of nickel per week, and other parts in contact with the skin no more than 0.5 μg/cm² per week. Plated jewellery must stay within these limits for at least two years of normal use. I've written more about this in our guide to jewellery materials and allergies."

Why does my ear turn red if the earring contains no nickel?

"Redness and itching are usually caused by something other than nickel. A common cause is dirt: skin oil, sweat and cosmetics build up on the post and in the piercing, allowing bacteria to multiply. Wash the post and your earlobe regularly with mild soap, dry them carefully and take your earrings out at night. If the redness doesn't settle within a few days, see a doctor or ask at a pharmacy."

Are the earrings water-resistant?

"The question sounds a little funny, since metal doesn't mind water. But there's a grain of truth in it. Shampoo, soap and skin oils can dry on the surface of the jewellery and dull it over time. If a stone is glued in place, the glue can loosen if you often wear the earrings in the shower or sauna. That's why it's a good idea to take stone-set earrings out before you shower."

How can I tell a good-quality earring?

"Put the earring in and take it out. The clasp should work smoothly and click firmly shut, and the hinge shouldn't wobble. Also check that the pair is identical: the same size, the same shine and, for stone-set earrings, stones of the same colour. If you find yourself wondering which earring is the better one, the finish isn't consistent. You'll find more tips in our guide to recognising quality jewellery."
