A pink tourmaline in a silver setting
A small silver necklace with a genuine pink tourmaline, the birthstone for October. The pendant has a four-prong setting, and the stone is approximately 5 mm in diameter.
Characteristics
Tourmaline comes in almost every colour of the rainbow, and pink is the most popular shade as the October birthstone. Tourmaline is a hard stone (7–7.5 on the Mohs scale) and durable, so it's well suited to everyday wear.
Tourmaline as a birthstone
Tourmaline is the birthstone for October, alongside opal. It was named an October birthstone in 1912 because it is more durable than opal. According to an ancient Egyptian legend, tourmaline travelled from deep within the earth up to the surface, passing through a rainbow and taking on all of its colours. Tourmaline is believed to bring strength and balance to the wearer, and pink tourmaline has long been linked with love and gentleness.
Tourmaline makes a lovely gift for someone born in October, for example as a birthday or confirmation gift. A silver initial tag looks lovely next to the pendant on the same chain, for example with the recipient's initial.
